Why Research at UVA? (The Collections)
This fellowship offers a unique opportunity because of the library's vast holdings. The Albert and Shirley Small Special Collections Library houses over 15 million manuscripts and 400,000 books.
Most notably, the library has recently acquired the John L. Nau III Civil War History Collection. This massive addition includes:

- 250 diaries.
- 4,000 images related to the Civil War.
As a 2026 fellow, you will be among the researchers with access to these invaluable primary sources.
Eligibility Criteria
The Nau Center is looking for serious scholars with a proven track record. To apply, you must meet the following requirements:
- Residency: You must live beyond a 60-mile radius of Charlottesville, VA.
- Academic Status: You must fit into one of these categories:
- Hold a PhD (or equivalent degree).
- Be a Doctoral Student who has advanced to candidacy.
- Be an Independent Scholar with a significant record of scholarly achievement.
- Nationality: Open to both U.S. citizens and foreign nationals.
Fellowship Benefits
Financial Support: The $2,500 stipend is intended to assist with travel, housing, and living expenses during your research trip. Access: Full access to the holdings of the Small Special Collections Library and other units of the UVA Library system. Note: Fellows are responsible for arranging their own transportation and housing.
