JSPS Opens 2026 Short-Term Fellowships for International Scholars Seeking Research in Japan

The Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) has announced the Postdoctoral Fellowships (Short-Term Program). This initiative provides a unique opportunity for young pre- and post-doctoral researchers from the US, Canada, and Europe to conduct cooperative research at leading Japanese universities and institutions.

This fellowship awards 30 positions annually for a duration ranging from 1 to 12 months. Whether you are a humanities scholar or a physical scientist, this program allows you to advance your research under the guidance of a host in Japan. Who Is Eligible?

This program is designed for early-career researchers. To qualify, you must meet one of the following academic criteria:

• Postdoctoral Scholars: You must have obtained your doctoral degree at a university outside Japan within six years of the fellowship start date.
• Doctoral Students: You must be currently enrolled in a doctoral course outside Japan and scheduled to receive your Ph.D. within two years of starting the research in Japan.
• Experienced Researchers: Persons who have engaged in continuous research for at least three years at a university or research institution in an eligible country are also eligible (must have an excellent research record).

Note: Researchers must be from a country with diplomatic relations with Japan (or from Taiwan/Palestine).

Eligible Host Institutions

You must conduct your research at specific types of institutions in Japan:

• Universities and inter-university research institutes.
• MEXT-affiliated institutions engaged in research.
• Colleges of technology.
• Institutions designated by the Minister of MEXT.

Application Process (Crucial Step)

Unlike many fellowships where you apply directly, applications for this program must be submitted by your potential host researcher in Japan.

1. Find a Host: Identify a researcher in Japan who is willing to host you.
2. Collaborate: Work with your host to develop a research plan.
